Q&A

About the features and properties of bifidobacteria

Since both are used in yogurt, bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria are often confused and thought to be the same microbes, but taxonomically, they are of different genera. Lactic acid bacteria metabolize sugar to produce lactic acid, whereas bifidobacteria produce acetic acid as well as lactic acid. More importantly, yogurt containing bifidobacteria is known to have more potent physiological functions such as maintaining intestinal health.

Bacterial names sometimes contain letter and number codes, which are called strain designations. Just like different people have different characters, different bacterial strains, even from the same species, can have different physiological functions and morphology. The strain designations are intended to differentiate bacterial strains based on these differences.

We have demonstrated through many years of research that B. longum BB536 and B. breve M-16V are safe and have various functions. Since bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria have features that differ from one strain to another, their properties and physiological functions can differ even within the same genus, Bifidobacterium.

Eating a well-balanced, fiber-rich diet and living an orderly, less-stressful life are important. When it is difficult to follow these suggestions, consuming yogurt or nutritional supplements containing Bifidobacterium can help increase the bifidobacteria in your intestine.

The word “probiotics,” which means the opposite of “antibiotics,” comes from “probiosis,” meaning commensal relationship between different organisms. Probiotics are defined as “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host (e.g., humans).” Bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria are typical probiotics.

Sensible ways of eating bifidobacteria

Bifidobacteria may be less influenced by gastric acid when eaten after a meal. However, it is more important to make it a habit to consume bifidobacteria every day. It would be better to set the time of the day to have them so that it becomes a habit, such as taking them after every breakfast.

Since fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and dietary fiber, a good combination effect can be expected by eating fruits and vegetables together with bifidobacteria.

Since bifidobacteria can live within the human body, they can survive normal body temperature. It is not suitable to consume them with hot drinks.

In a study on the effectiveness of bifidobacteria for maintaining intestinal health, effects were observed when consuming 100 g per day of yogurt containing more than 2 billion of B. longum BB536. It is important to consume them everyday rather than a large amount at one time.

It varies from person to person and depends when you consume them. The probability of reaching the intestines alive may be higher when they are consumed after a meal.

When taken by healthy individuals, there is no problem for pregnant women and children to consume bifidobacteria. If you have allergies or any other concerns, always contact your personal physician.
