(1) Preventing colon cancer
Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) is thought to be a possible risk factor for colon cancer. In a study, 32 people who carried this bacterium consumed yogurt containing B. longum BB536 or milk for 8 weeks, and the number of ETBF in their stool was counted. Before the study began, an average of 10 million ETBF was detected per 1 gram of the subjects' stool, but in the group that consumed the yogurt containing B. longum BB536, the bacterial count decreased to about one million.
(2) Preventing carcinogenesis
Rats were administered a carcinogen for 58 weeks to investigate the incidence of tumor. Those fed a diet containing B. longum BB536 had a markedly reduced incidence of tumor in the organs examined.
